Divorce may be illegal in California

If John Marcotte has his way the saying “til death do us part,” will actually hold meaning. What’s being called a satirical response to last year’s gay marriage ban, Marcotte wants to put a measure on the ballot next year to ban divorce in California.
Marcotte decided if folks in California are so passionate about marriage between a man and a woman, then forgoing the right to a divorce should be no problem.
“Since California has decided to protect traditional marriage, I think it would be hypocritical of us not to sacrifice some of our own rights to protect traditional marriage even more,” the 38-year-old married father of two said.
The AP reports Marcotte needs 694,354 signatures by March 22 to get his no-divorce-initiative on next year’s state ballot. And apparently, people are signing on not only because they disagree with California’s vote on gay marriage, but also because they seriously think banning divorce is a good idea. In the United States, about half of all marriges end in divorce. Philippines and Malta, are the only countries that currently ban divorce.
