Xiamen ranked 5th on the list of China’s top 10 cities with the highest divorce rate in 2010 and its divorce rate reached 34.9%, reports Xiamen Economic Daily.  According to the survey, Siming District of Xiamen saw the highest divorce rate in Xiamen in 2010. 40% of the divorced couples' marriages last less than five years; 55.8% of them were younger than 35 years old and 32.2% of them had low education background.  Extramarital affairs is the main cause for the high divorce rate in Xiamen.

According to a random survey of 400 married people, when extramarital affairs occurred, nearly half of the males chose to save their marriage and 66.7% of the females would also strive to save their marriage.  Social help should be called and effective communication channels should be established to help curb the high divorce rate in Xiamen, according to CPPCC members from Siming District of Xiamen.
