Separation & Kids, How To Help Them Cope the Divorce

Posted in : Divorce and Children

(added few months ago!)

Sometimes the most affected in a divorce are our children. This is a sad but true fact about separation. As we are all aware divorce is on the rise and has been for quite some time. We need to ensure that if we are going through a separation and have children that our main goal is to ensure their well being and understanding of the current situation.

It is very important to help our kids understand the reasons behind the separation but only in a way that protects both grownups in the eyes of the children. This is important from the children perspective as it could damage them long term to be fed a negative image of either adults by the other.

Although divorce is tough on the adults, we need to focus on ensuring the children do not feel like they are to blame for what is happening. If this is not done it can lead to problems later in life for the kids by having them develop a complex over the situation.

Be sure to let your children school know what is happening as we commonly find kids will act out at school from the issues they are building up at home. This way the teachers can keep an eye on the kids and make sure that they are coping appropriately with their emotions.

Letting your children know that they are loved by both grownups very much can be a very reassuring thing for kids going through a parents breakup. This will also depend alot on how old your childern are when going through the breakup. Generally early teenagers will act out in response to the breakup and this should be expected. If this does happen the best way to deal with this is to sit down and have a lenghty talk with your child and find out excatly what is bothering them.

In summary ensure that your children are aware of the situation and be honest with them about what is happening this will prevent more anxiety than what will already be there. I hope this has given you some guidance on how to help your children cope with your breakup.
