People in the south are more likely to divorce, but then again they're also much more likely to marry. A new U.S. Census Bureau report shows the south, which traditionally has higher marriage rates, also has high divorce rates. Actually the South now boasts the highest rate in the nation, while the Northeast has the lowest divorce rate.
Michele Many, an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and a family therapist at LSU Health Sciences Center says there are many reasons for the big regional differences, like income and education levels, along with traditions and religious views. Many says people in the South generally are poorer, less educated and marry younger, which all put stress on a marriage.
She says divorce tends to throw women in the south into poverty, and since they're usually the ones raising the kids, the whole cycle starts all over again. Her advice to break the cycle: "Get an education and ground yourself in a profession before you get out in the world and get married."The Northeast has the lowest rate of divorce, which is where people tend to delay marriage.
